Design & Engineering of Lightning Protection Systems for Plants, Assets as per IEC, NFPA or IS Codes

An effective lightning protection system needs to control different kinds  of risks.

While the current in a  lightning flash causes number of electrical,  thermal and mechanical hazards there uis  also need to  address following important aspect:

Risk to persons (and animals) are :                     • Direct flash Impact                                                • Step potential  Impact                                            • Touch potential  Impact                                         • Side flash Impct                                            

The design of a lightning protection system      ( LPS ) needs to:

• Intercept lightning flash (i.e. create a preferred point of strike)

• Conduct the lightning current to earth

• Dissipate high current into the earth

• Create an equipotential bond to prevent hazardous potential differences between LPS, structure and internal elements/circuits

In achieving this the lightning protection system must:

• Not cause thermal or mechanical damage to the structure

• Not cause sparking which may cause fire or explosion

• Limit step and touch voltages to control the risk of injuryto occupants

• Limit damage to internal electrical and electronic systems

Our System  Designs are based on :

• Mesh method

• Rolling sphere method (RSM)

• Protection angle method (PAM)

Who Are At Risk from Lightning ?

 

Everyone  on this planet and every asset on this planet  is at risk with respect to lightning, the changing climate patterns are causing very large thunderstorms and we need to protect precious asset that is life and man made assets.

Lightning is a natural phenomenon where, for the purpose of analysis and design, a statistical approach is taken. Data from International Council of Large Electrical Systems (CIGRE)indicates that:                   • 5% of first, negative lightning strokes exceed 90 kA(average is 33 kA)

 • 5% of positive lightning strokes exceed 250 kA(average is 34 kA)

• 5% of negative subsequent strokes exceed a rate of current rise of 161 kA/μs

 

Following assets are at more risk  if  they do not have lightning protection systems:

- High Rise Buildings &  Tall Structures

- Buidlings & Industrial Plants Near the Sea

- Buildings & Plants on Mountain Tops

- Industrial Tank Farms storing flammable liquids & gases

- Oil & Gas Plants

- Power Plants

- Fertliser Plants

- Cement Plants

- Buildings Having Solar Panels on Top of Roof or Solar Farms

 

We are not serious about lightning protection systems in our country but our advice is that all assets need to have Lightning Protection Systems as loss due to a strike is very severe and will cause a potential loss to life and asset.
